Frascione Gallery has sold an interesting painting by Francesco Cairo to the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence. The subject is the Allegory of Painting and Drawing, though Cairo's contacts with important literary figures of the Court, related to the Accademia dei Desiosi in Rome, could suggest a closer connection with the literary world and therefore with Horace's ut pictura poesis. The artwork was mentioned in the inventory of the Royal Palace of Turin written by Antonio Della Cornia in 1634: this date is an important ante quem for the dating of the painting. It informs us about the style, already completely baroque of Francesco Cairo at that period. The artwork was commissioned by the Savoy who were the protectors and patrons of the artist.
