PIENZA ACQUIRES A PAINTING BY PIETRO LORENZETTI

Frascione Gallery has sold an important painting by Pietro Lorenzetti to the Municipality of Pienza. The artwork is one of the panel that formed the Monticchiello Altarpiece, today dismembered and divided between the Museo Diocesano in Pienza, Musée de Tessé in Le Mans and Museo Horne in Florence. The small masterpiece, realized by Pietro Lorenzetti around 1315, was part of the Raimond Van Marle’s collection and was recently rediscovered by Frascione Gallery. The restoration of the panel, already in an excellent state of conservation, was followed directly by Gabriele Fattorini, professor at the University of Florence and Director of the Museo Diocesano in Pienza. The purchase of the artwork was the result of a funding campaign organized by the Municipality. It allowed the acquisition of one of the most important painters of the Italian 14th Century. The acquisition was particularly successful considering that the municipality has just two thousand inhabitants. The cusp will be exhibited at the Museo Diocesano di Pienza allowing not only the local community but also the numerous scholars and tourists who crowd the streets of this small town every year to enjoy the culturally significant piece.
